Message from the Director General (during temporary closure)

I am OSAKA Eriko, Director General of the National Art Center, Tokyo (NACT). Sadly, my first message on this website comes at this time of temporary closure, but I would like to take this opportunity to convey my thoughts to everyone.

We would like to express our deepest sympathies and condolences for those who passed away because of the coronavirus disease, and we hope that everyone affected will recover as soon as possible.

To prevent the spread of coronavirus the NACT has been temporarily closed since February 29. Although the future is still uncertain, our staff and I are working hard towards NACT’s reopening. It is with the deepest regret that exhibitions which have been in preparation for many years cannot be visited, but in an effort to find other ways to introduce you to our endeavors, I hope you will enjoy the selection of content currently available online listed below.

Art activities help us to deepen our understanding of the world and its people, they offer a sense of coexistence with others and different values, together with essential viewpoints for accepting diversity. Even to overcome this global emergency, the power of art is vitally important.

I pray for the infection to end and for normal daily lives to resume in the nearest possible future. Furthermore, I sincerely hope to see soon the day when many people will again be able to enjoy "the pleasure of discovering art" at the National Art Center, Tokyo.
