Painting Love in the Louvre Collections

March 1 (Wed), 2023 - June 12 (Mon), 2023

  • Past Exhibitions
  • Special Exhibitions

Love—a basic human emotion has been an important theme in Western art since ancient times. Mythological paintings, based on Greek and Roman myth, and genre paintings of real people in everyday life depicted the passions, desires, and sensual pleasures, as well as the anguish and sorrow, of gods and mortals deeply infatuated with someone special. In religious paintings, God’s expression of unconditional love for humanity and humanity’s love for God were shown to Christians through subjects such as the Holy Family, the crucifixion of Jesus, and the martyrdom of the Saints.
This exhibition will show how Western artists have portrayed love in its many forms through 73 paintings carefully selected from the vast collections of the Musée du Louvre. We invite you on a tour of passionate expressions of love from the 16th century to mid-19th century by some of Europe's preeminent painters.
