After winning a special selection award at the Japan Advertising Art Exhibition in 1957, Tanaami continued to produce numerous posters. In 1967 he declared, “If a printed work is created with consideration given to the outcome of the colors, visual effects and so forth when it is printed, then each copy should be considered an original work in its own right.” In 1968, he held a solo exhibition of his posters at the Seibu Department Store in Shibuya, Tokyo. For Tanaami, posters became a medium that transcended the realm of commercial art. The silkscreened posters shown here stunningly exemplify the unique sense of color and illustrative qualities that characterize his works of the 1960s. Also presented here are posters recreated after 2000 based on designs of the 1960s and 1970s.
