Dream Diary and Greenhouse

Tanaami began keeping a dream diary composed of writings and drawings, inspired by the Kamakura period (1185-1333) monk Myoe Shonin, who was known for extensively documenting his dreams. The dreams in Tanaami’s diary range from erotic to bizarre, incorporating many motifs that have appeared in his works, such as Albrecht Dürer’s rhinoceros, cityscapes from Giorgio de Chirico’s paintings, and boxing rings. Tanaami’s drawings are marked by a unique touch and obsessive shading, delivering a raw impression and seeming to lay bare the artist’s psyche.
The glass-enclosed greenhouse was created for Tanaami’s 2020 solo exhibition Memorial Reconstruction. It contains a traditional arched bridge, which has symbolic significance for the artist. The bridge is surrounded by his dream diaries and various objects and materials that have shaped his memory, embodying dreams and memories as the wellsprings of his creativity.
