Breathing of the Wind (Correspondence by Animation)

Tanaami and Nobuhiro Aihara began their collaboration with this animated film, exchanging drawings without establishing a specific theme. Here images of rotating human beings, wheels, and sundry other elements appear and mutate in a procession that traces the trajectory of a conversation via drawings between the two artists. Tanaami recalls that as time went on, he became able to sense his collaborator’s physiological rhythms and breathing patterns through the drawings he received. This project allows viewers to follow their evolving communication as expressed through a shared visual language. The distinctive approach of continuously adding to and modifying each other’s drawings developed into what they termed an “animation battle.”
