These sculptures fuse the hallucinations Tanaami experienced during hospitalization with his childhood memories of playing with primary-colored building blocks. Contrasting with the innocent simplicity evoked by the blocks, the series features sexual imagery including female nudes, elephants, dog bones, giboshi (ornamental bulbs) on the edges of boxing rings, and other phallic protrusions. The use of colors like red, purple, and black, and a finish reminiscent of collectible figurines, conveys a fetishistic sensibility. The works resemble miniature gardens that recreate fragments of past memories, and exude a mysterious allure that offers glimpses into the artist’s subconscious. The large-scale furniture was produced through a collaboration with the Osaka-based creative unit graf for the 2004 exhibition Ascension Furniture+ Eccentric City.
