Playboy (Japanese edition)

In 1975, Shueisha launched the Japanese edition of Playboy, the American men’s monthly magazine, under a licensing agreement. Tanaami served as the monthly’s first art director from its debut issue until January 1986, exerting substantial authority over the magazine’s layout. He approached editorial design as an exploration of temporality characterized by the dynamic interplay of visual and textual content from page to page, and thoroughly implemented this methodology in the magazine. Full-page spreads highlighted the prominence of illustrations, and pages employing such mechanisms as cut-outs in heavy paper were a regular feature. Tanaami collaborated with cutting-edge illustrators like Sawako Goda, Harumi Yamaguchi, and Hajime Sorayama, incorporating elements like exaggerated hyperrealism that were not necessarily in line with his own style.
